Sleep Apnea Snoring

An estimated 12 to 20 million Americans suffer some degree of sleep apnea. They awaken groggily and experience daytime drowsiness, irritability, and fatigue because of decreased oxygen flow during sleep. They may snore, as well. If you or someone you know experiences these symptoms, Dr. Franks can conduct a sleep apnea assessment and prescribe non-invasive therapy to promote healthful, restorative slumber.

What is sleep apnea? What causes it?

During the night, sleep apnea sufferers repeatedly stop breathing for periods of 10 seconds or more. When the brain senses a lack of oxygen, it tells the body to wake up and breathe. Patients may enter a lighter sleep state or awaken completely, inhibiting the deep REM sleep needed for daytime alertness. Sleep apnea also increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other serious health complications.

Causes of sleep apnea include, but are not limited to, enlarged anatomical structures, excess weight, tissues that relax and impede airflow, sinus problems, or a tongue that falls back and blocks the throat.

Non-Surgical Sleep Apnea & Snoring Treatment

Dr. Franks will conduct a thorough assessment and may recommend that you undergo a sleep study for diagnosis. We offer non-surgical, oral appliance therapy to alleviate sleep apnea. This treatment eliminates snoring, too. A comfortable, custom-fitted nightguard holds the jaw forward to open-air passageways and eliminate obstructions. Patients breathe freely, deeply, and quietly.
